There has been a lot of discussion and comparison taking place between Ubuntu and Windows. To compare them one must try both of them. I had been using Windows since times unknown, until very recently, I tried Ubuntu and here is my experience with Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot.
It
has been over two months now since i have installed Ubuntu in
my laptop. And i am loving it!
For
those who do not know about Ubuntu - it is a Linux based open
source operating system. It has been developed and distributed FREE
by Canonical partners.
To
experience Ubuntu you do not have to install it in your laptop
directly. Just install it on a CD or a USB drive and run through it. click here to experience it.
Its
new version Oneiric Ocelot's (Ubuntu 11.10) Unity desktop is better
than Windows XP in look and feel. You can download several themes and
give your operating system a super cool look.
For
customization in Ubuntu, there is no limit. You can make it the way you want
it unlike Windows operating systems where you purchase it and bear
it the way it is. Ubuntu is more like android phone or iPhone, where applications can be installed from their respective application markets. In Ubuntu, applications can be installed from Ubuntu Software Centre. Although you do not find MS Word, MS
Excel, MS Office et al in it but it has LibreOffice Writer,
LibreOffice Calc etc available for free to replace those Microsoft Office softwares. Word documents, spread sheets etc. are readable
and updateable by LibreOffice.
Mozilla Firefox web browser comes already installed with it. Chrome or Opera browsers can also be installed.
Applications like Gimp(photo editor), Audacious(audio player), VLC(you know it) and many others are available for free at Ubuntu Software centre.
You
do not get upgrade notifications for your downloaded applications and
you don't have to upgrade them one by one. Just run Update Manager
and Voila! All the applications - for which updates are
available of course - will be updated.
It
is virus free... WHAT!? VIRUS FREE!!
Yeah!
You read it right. virus free. This is because Linux based operating
systems are very much secure already and also it seems that hackers
are not yet interested in hacking Ubuntu.
It
is Fast!
Machines
running Windows tend to slow down with time but with Ubuntu, this is
not the case. Be it your old system or a new machine with core
processors or a netbook, Ubuntu works well with all of them. (superfast on my Toshiba Satellite)
And
the winning feature – Ubuntu One (Cloud)
You
get 5 GB of cloud storage for free with the feature of
synchronization of contacts, music, videos, photographs with your tablet or phone. The moment you take a snap
from your android, it gets into your laptop via Ubuntu one! :)
Now after so much eulogizing Ubuntu, i want to state its biggest con - It has compatibility issues. Most of the CD's which we get free with the some books might not work with Ubuntu; and some web portals too, the ones which are specifically made for Windows or Mac, might throw errors.

All said and done, I would conclude by saying that Windows
might be easier to use(specifically because we are used to it) but Ubuntu is definately more
interesting.
P.S.- This was my experience, for full screen-to-screen review click here.
